Below is a foreword by Thomas Tull for the Comic Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope book, currently available through your favorite book store on via Amazon. You can learn more about the Comic Con book here.
I love Comic-Con. I love what it represents, what it feels like to immerse yourself in the place. I love to wander and rediscover the endless supply of the heroes and images that have thrilled me since I was a kid; to see dads experience it with their kids, a next generation of fans.
“It’s difficult to describe to someone who has never been to Comic-Con the level of energy and passion that is so real you can feel it as you roam the huge halls”
It’s difficult to describe to someone who has never been to Comic-Con the level of energy and passion that is so real you can feel it as you roam the huge halls. The visitors who make the pilgrimage are all in and committed to celebrating the culture they have helped to create—all without a hint of self-awareness. I am in awe of how far the culture has come in the past few decades, with new comics, movies, toys, and collectibles going from fringe to leading the world of entertainment and grabbing it by the throat.
I feel unbelievably lucky because in my work with Legendary I have had a chance as an adult to work with many of the heroes I had as a kid. These are heroes who come alive in San Diego and torpedo through Hall H and onto pages and movie screens so fans around the world can be a part of the stories.
So when Morgan Spurlock asked if I would like to produce the movie with him, I thought it was a way to truly honor the culture and people who are the Con in a way that brings the experience to a wider audience. I hope you feel that this project celebrates one of the most powerful cultural zeitgeists of our time, and mostly is a tribute to the fans who keep coming back every year.
